"Lower Back Pain
Information"
Lower
back pain will cause pain and discomfort to millions of
Americans in this year alone. For some of them the pain will be
unbearable. Back pain is caused by huge number conditions or
injuries and because of that it is very hard to make proper
diagnosis of the problem.
In some cases back pain is accompanied by symptoms
like strong abdominal pain, fever, chills, or bowel and bladder
problems. If that is the case it could be a sign of a grave medical
problem and you should visit your doctor immediately for proper
diagnosis.
Pain of the lower back is divided in three
categories. Each is based on a way in which pain spreads through
the body.
Three lower back pain categories are:
1. Axial – know also as
simple or mechanical back pain. This is the most common of the
three, it is limited only to the lower back area and does not
spread to the rest of the body. It has many causes like disc
degeneration or back muscles damage, damaged tendons or
ligaments.
Axial lower back pain is usually treated with
physical therapy, specific exercise, rest, both cold and hot
compresses, ointments and pain medications. However if pain is to
strong or will not go away you must visit your doctor for further
consultations.
2. Radicular – popularly
known as sciatica. It is caused by a pressure on the lower spinal
nerves. Pain often times spreads as far as legs and thighs. Because
sciatic nerve spreads all the way to the calf including thighs, it
is gravely affected by this pressure. It often causes stronger leg
then back pain.
The causes for this can be herniated disc that is
pressuring the nerve, narrowing of the nerve passage, nerve injury
or in some cases diabetes.
Sciatica is usually treated with medication and
physical therapy for up to eight weeks. If the pain does not
subside by then it can be relieved by surgical procedure.
3. Referred lower pack pain –
Often spreads to the other parts of the human body and is often
caused by disc degeneration, back muscles damage, damage done to
the tendons or ligaments just like with Axial pain.
Treatment is also very similar and you should make
careful distinction between these two and the Referred lower back
pain because in that case pain travels in a very exact ways through
some nerves.
In most cases lower back pain can be relieved by a
combination of physical therapy, medication, rest and usual
hot/cold packs. But if it is persistent and very strong pain a more
serious treatments like surgery might be advised by a doctor.
